Activity-based Modeling and Microsimulation of Emergency Evacuations
نویسنده
چکیده
Most existing emergency evacuation studies assume evacuees to evacuate from their residence locations. However, depending on the time of day, people’s movements are constrained not only by their workplaces, but also the necessity of picking up family members. Family member interactions, a typical activity during an evacuation, can greatly affect the evacuation process. Activity-based modeling has been applied to estimate daily traffic demand widely. However, only limited research has been reported to incorporate the activity component in examining evacuation processes, particularly for mass evacuations at a micro-scale. Under this context, this study aims to analyze the activity-based travel pattern and its impact on emergency evacuations in the case of a hypothetical emergency evacuation of Galveston Island, Texas. In the study, one typical type of daily trip, picking up school-age children, is considered. All households with school-age children are assumed to pick up their children first in an evacuation. Trip chains are defined to represent the movements from workplaces to schools and then to destinations. This study employs agent-based microsimulation techniques to model the evacuation process at the individual-driver level. The simulation results suggest that the overall evacuation time may not be significantly affected when the trips of picking-up school-age children are considered in the case of Galveston Island. However, the average travel and delay time of individual vehicles may increase dramatically, which suggests the occurrence of considerable congestions during the evacuation. The findings demonstrated the importance of considering activity-based trips in evacuations. Activity-Based Modeling and Microsimulation of Emergency Evacuations

Agent-Based Emergency Evacuation Simulation with Individuals with Disabilities in the Population
Catastrophic events have raised numerous issues concerning how effectively the built environment accommodates the evacuation needs of individuals with disabilities. Individuals with disabilities represent a significant, yet often overlooked, portion of the population disproportionately affected in emergency situations. Incorporating disability considerations into emergency evacuation planning, ...

During and after any extreme event of natural or man-made origin, getting people out of harms way and to an area of safety are primary objectives. Orderly and efficient evacuations are the key to saving lives. This was clearly demonstrated during the attacks on the Pentagon and World Trade Center towers on September 11, 2001. One of the major recommendations from the US Government’s Draft Final...
متن کاملFundamental Building Blocks for Vehicle-Pedestrian Interaction in Emergency Evacuations
Evacuations requiring large numbers of pedestrians to evacuate and potentially interact with vehicles are unique in the complexity of interactions that must be understood and in the potentially catastrophic consequences of poor management. On the pedestrian side alone, these events, which may result from a variety of causes including terrorist attacks, bomb threats, and building fires, require ...
متن کاملA general activity-based methodology for simulating multimodal transportation networks during emergencies
Many possible emergency conditions, including evacuations, negatively affect the urban transportation system by substantially increasing the travel demand and/or reducing the supplied capacity. A transportation model can be used to quantify and understand the impact of the underlying disasters and corresponding management strategies. To this end, we develop an efficient methodology suitable for...
متن کاملFactors Influencing Failure Emergency Evacuation in Work Environments during Fire
One of the necessary measures of saving human life in emergency situations, such as fires, is the safe and swift evacuation of people. The prerequisites for this are to anticipate, identify, and eliminate factors preventing people from leaving buildings in a timely and safe manner while moving them to a safe place [1]. The occurrence of errors caused by engineering, design, human, and psycholog...
